Training Co-ordination

It is the aim of the Continuing Education Committee to arrange, provide, co-ordinate and publish a programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for members of the Northern Circuit so that, wherever possible, Circuiteers have access to a wide range of relevant and useful courses on Circuit.

Established practitioners
All Established Practitioners are now required to complete 12 hours of CPD per year. It is the aim of the Committee to provide at least 20 hours of CPD per year in order for Established Practitioners to fulfil their requirement. The specialist courses will include Ethics, Criminal Law, Civil Law and Family Law.

New practitioners
New Practitioners are required to undertake a minimum of 45 hours of CPD in the first three years of practice. This must include 9 hours of Advocacy training and 3 hours of Ethics. It is the aim of the Committee to provide at least 90 hours of CPD over a three year period from which New Practitioners may choose their compulsory hours.

Further information on the continuing education requirements for barristers and pupils is available at the Bar Council’s Legal Education site.

Chambers’ Management Courses
The Northern Circuit will also provide courses of relevance to barristers and clerks involved in chambers’ management on various topics from time to time, such as the pupil supervisor courses that took place in September, and the recent training on Equality and Diversity. (These courses may or may not be accredited for CPD depending on the nature of the course).
