The 2009/10 Queen’s Counsel Competition Awards were announced on 26 February 2010.

The Annual Remuneration Conference will be held on the 19 June 2010, from 9.45am to 4pm at the Hotel Russell, Russell Square, London.

Conference topic will be Alternative Business Structures. Speakers will include: Baroness Ruth Deech DBE, Nicholas Green QC, Professor Stephen Mayson, Patricia Robertson QC and James Thorne.

Congratulatory Dinner

There are still some places available for the dinner in London on Saturday 5 December honouring the appointment of Mr Justice Holroyde to the High Court.

The dinner is now less than a month away and is an important evening both for the Circuit and Holroyde J.

Pupils and those waiting to be elected this Term are also welcome.

In any event, it would be much appreciated if people could confirm their attendance by not later than Friday 20 November.

Manchester Metropolitan University – Evening Seminars

We are currently sending information packs out for the new practitioner advocacy training, which is to take place at Manchester Metropolitan University as follows:

Friday 20 November 2009
Registration: 5pm. Seminar duration: 5.30pm – 8pm.

Saturday 21 November 2009
Registration: 9am. Seminar duration: 9.30pm – approx. 5.30pm.

PIBA held its Northern Circuit Conference on 24 October at the Haydock Park Racecourse. The event, which was accredited for 4.5 hours, was open to PIBA members and new members alike. If you would like to take the opportunity to join, membership application forms are available on the PIBA website.

New Silks on Circuit

The Northern Circuit sends its congratulations to those Circuiteers who have been elevated to Silk in the 2008-9 competition. They are: Mark George of Garden Court North, Manchester; Graham Knowles of Exchange Chambers, Manchester; Michael Rawlinson of Kings Chambers, Manchester; Jeffrey Samuels of St Johns Buildings, Manchester and Dennis Watson of Lincoln House Chambers, Manchester. Queens Counsel has always been a sign of the highest quality. The new appointments system seeks to maintain and recognise those high standards as well as to ensure that the opportunity to take silk is open to all of the necessary ability. The application process includes taking references from a much wider range of sources than has been the case in the past and only from those with direct working experience of the candidate.
