International Expert Witness Residential Course – Lancaster House Hotel ***Bookings closed***

10th May 2024 - 12th May 2024, 18:00 - 13:00

INTERNATIONAL EXPERT WITNESS TRAINING 10 – 12 MAY 2024 – LANCASTER BOOKING INVITATION This advanced advocacy course is being run by the Circuit at the Lancaster House Hotel over the weekend of May 10th – 12th 2024. The Northern Circuit has forged close links with the Royal College of Psychiatrists to provide a first-rate training package for barristers seeking to enhance their advocacy skills. Now in its tenth year, the course has gained international recognition and is something of which the Circuit is rightly proud. Pioneered by HHJ Field QC, the first Northern Circuit Expert Advocacy Course was held in October 2012. Since that time, it has been honed and improved and has gone from strength to strength. This year, I am delighted to say that we shall welcome trainers from South Africa and Scotland Scottish Bar. I am writing to you to invite you now to support this venture by placing your name on the delegate list now. Demand is expected to be high. The venue has proved perfect for our needs and been much enjoyed by all. With the assistance of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the role of the experts will be taken by doctors currently undergoing witness training, with case preparation, conferences, examination in chief and cross examination all explored within the setting of “specialist courts” – Civil, Criminal and Family. Full time judges will preside over “court hearings” and training will be provided by senior practitioners or judges. The course will commence with registration between 5pm and 7pm on Friday 10th May and the course will close at 1pm on Sunday 11th May 2024. For reasons of resource and practicality, places are limited. Each specialist group will be restricted to 36 members of the Bar on a “first come, first served” basis. The cost, which is subsidised by Circuit, will be £250 per person (circuit members), to include refreshments, room and dinner, and breakfast on Sunday, which is great value for a unique course such as this. For non-circuit members the cost will be £350. There will be a high demand for places, and I invite you to contact Clare Calder at the Circuit Office admin@northerncircuit.org.uk as soon as possible, and in any event by 4pm on 31st January 2024 to make a booking. In view of the past experiences and hotel booking requirements, a deposit of £100 is requested upon confirmation of your booking once your place is confirmed with the balance payable 4 weeks in advance of the course. We look forward to your support and to seeing you in May. Christopher Melton KC Chair of the Circuit Advocacy Committee 12th January 2024
